Qualcomm Zeroth Processors: Brain-Inspired Computing

Posted on 06:53 by Unknown
Qualcomm’s technologies are designed from the ground-up with speed and power efficiency in mind. This way, devices that use our products can run smoothly and maximize battery life driven experiences. As mobile computing becomes increasingly pervasive, so do our expectations of the devices we use and interact with in our everyday lives. We want these devices to be smarter, anticipate our needs, and share our perception of the world so we can interact with them more naturally. The computational complexity of achieving these goals using traditional computing architectures is quite challenging, particularly in a power- and size-constrained environment vs. in the cloud and using supercomputers.
For the past few years our Research and Development teams have been working on a new computer architecture that breaks the traditional mold. We wanted to create a new computer processor that mimics the human brain and nervous system so devices can have embedded cognition driven by brain inspired computing—this is Qualcomm Zeroth processing.
We have three main goals for Qualcomm Zeroth processors:
1. Biologically Inspired Learning
We want Qualcomm Zeroth products to not only mimic human-like perception but also have the ability to learn how biological brains do.  Instead of preprogramming behaviors and outcomes with a lot of code, we’ve developed a suite of software tools that enable devices to learn as they go and get feedback from their environment.
In the video below, we outfitted a robot with a Qualcomm Zeroth processor and placed it in an environment with colored boxes. We were then able to teach it to visit white boxes only. We did this through dopaminergic-based learning, a.k.a. positive reinforcement—not by programming lines of code.

2. Enable Devices To See and Perceive the World as Humans Do
Another major pillar of Zeroth processor function is striving to replicate the efficiency with which our senses and our brain communicate information. Neuroscientists have created mathematical models that accurately characterize biological neuron behavior when they are sending, receiving or processing information. Neurons send precisely timed electrical pulses referred to as “spikes” only when a certain voltage threshold in a biological cell’s membrane is reached. These spiking neural networks (SNN) encode and transmit data very efficiently in both how our senses gather information from the environment and then how our brain processes and fuses all of it together.

Sound waves create touch feedback

UltraHaptics – it’s magic in the air

brisol news

UltraHaptics uses the principle of acoustic radiation force where a phased array of ultrasonic transducers is used to exert forces on a target in mid-air.  Haptic sensations are projected through a screen and directly onto the user’s hands.
The use of ultrasonic vibrations is a new technique for delivering tactile sensations to the user.  A series of ultrasonic transducers emit very high frequency sound waves. When all of the sound waves meet at the same location at the same time, they create sensations on a human’s skin.
By carrying out technical evaluations, the team have shown that the system is capable of creating individual points of feedback that are far beyond the perception threshold of the human hand.  The researchers have also established the necessary properties of a display surface that is transparent to 40kHz ultrasound.
The results from two user studies have demonstrated that feedback points with different tactile properties can be distinguished at smaller separations.  The researchers also found that users are able to identify different tactile properties with training.
Finally, the research team explored three new areas of interaction possibilities that UltraHaptics can provide: mid-air gestures, tactile information layers and visually restricted displays, and created an application for each.
Tom Carter, PhD student in the Department of Computer Science’s BIG research group, said: “Current systems with integrated interactive surfaces allow users to walk-up and use them with bare hands. Our goal was to integrate haptic feedback into these systems without sacrificing their simplicity and accessibility.
“To achieve this, we have designed a system with an ultrasound transducer array positioned beneath an acoustically transparent display. This arrangement allows the projection of focused ultrasound through the interactive surface and directly onto the users’ bare hands. By creating multiple simultaneous feedback points, and giving them individual tactile properties, users can receive localised feedback associated to their actions.”

Motion tracking technology extremely precise and inexpensive with minimal lag

Posted on 09:29 by Unknown

carnegie-mellon-disney-motion-tracking-technology-is-extremely-precise-and-inexpensive-with-minimal-lag.

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and Disney Research Pittsburgh have devised a motion tracking technology that could eliminate much of the annoying lag that occurs in existing video game systems that use motion tracking, while also being extremely precise and highly affordable.
Called Lumitrack, the technology has two components — projectors and sensors. A structured pattern, which looks something like a very large barcode, is projected over the area to be tracked. Sensor units, either near the projector or on the person or object being tracked, can then quickly and precisely locate movements anywhere in that area.
“What Lumitrack brings to the table is, first, low latency,” said Robert Xiao, a Ph.D. student in Carnegie Mellon’s Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII). “Motion tracking has added a compelling dimension to popular game systems, but there’s always a lag between the player’s movements and the movements of the avatar in the game. Lumitrack is substantially faster than these consumer systems, with near real-time response.”
Lumitrack enables high-speed, high-precision tracking by projecting a barcode-like pattern, or m-sequence, over an area. A sensor can determine its position based on the unique portion of the m-sequence pattern it can detect. (Credit: CMU)

Xiao said Lumitrack also is extremely precise, with sub-millimeter accuracy. Moreover, this performance is achieved at low cost. The sensors require little power and would be inexpensive to assemble in volume. The components could even be integrated into mobile devices, such as smartphones.
Many approaches exist for tracking human motion, including expensive, highly precise systems used to create computer-generated imagery (CGI) for films.
Though Lumitrack’s developers have targeted games as an initial application, the technology’s combination of low latency, high precision and low cost make it suitable for many applications, including CGI and human-robot interaction.
“We think the core technology is potentially transformative and that you could think of many more things to do with it besides games,” Poupyrev said.
A key to Lumitrack is the structured pattern that is projected over the tracking area. Called a binary m-sequence, the series of bars encodes a series of bits in which every sequence of seven bits appears only once. A simple optical sensor can thus quickly determine where it is based on which part of the sequence it sees. When two m-sequences are projected at right angles to each other, the sensor can determine its position in two dimensions; when multiple sensors are used, 3D motion tracking is possible.

This work was supported by the National Science Foundation, the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, a Google Ph.D. Fellowship and a Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship.

First walkable solar-paneled

Posted on 16:31 by Unknown
The George Washington University create  on the Virginia Science and Technology Campus
the first walk solar Panel

gw-debuts-solar-walk-virginia-science-and-technology-campus

We typically see photovoltaic panels up on roofs, as they're broad, open surfaces that receive a lot of sunlight. You know what else spends a lot of time in the scorching sun, though? Sidewalks. With that in mind, a team at Washington DC's The George Washington University has created what is claimed to be "the first walkable solar-paneled pathway in the world."
The 100 sq ft (9.3 sq m) rectangular Solar Walk was made using walkable PV floor panels manufactured by Spanish tech company Onyx Solar. Designed to be walked on, each solar energy-harvesting panel has an anti-slip surface and can support a load of up to 400 kg (882 lb).
The path, designed to demonstrate the capabilities of the technology, incorporates 27 of the translucent panels which together have a peak capacity of 400 watts. That's enough to illuminate an array of 450 LEDs that light the pathway at night, shining up through the panels from beneath. It also includes a trellis that hosts additional solar panels on top.
Studio39 Landscape Architecture built the Solar Walk, which can be found on the George Washington's Virginia Science and Technology Campus.

LG announces stacked, curved and cable batteries to go with flexible display phones-LG pregăteşte baterii flexibile

Posted on 10:23 by Unknown
LG-flexible Battery

The company announced on the 8th that it has succeeded in breaking the tradition of rectangular shaped batteries to lead the effort to a more sustainable future by mass producing batteries of different shapes.

The types of LG Chem’s future batteries can be categorized as the following. ▲ Stepped Battery, ▲ Curved Battery and ▲ Cable Battery.

At the moment, the chemical company is already mass producing stepped and curved batteries. Stepped Battery from Nanjing plant of LG Chem has been manufactured since July to power LG G2. However, the actual production of Cable Battery shall begin in upcoming years.

First of all, Stepped Battery refers to an integral type of a battery in which two batteries are added on top of each other in the shape of “step design.” The battery takes greater advantage of available space within the device than other batteries as it perfectly suits the changing trend of modern IT gadgets of flexible designs.

For example, recent mobile devices have been adopting round shapes and designs with rear buttons creating unnecessary “dead space” inside the gadget. With Stepped Batteries, the dead space can be filled up to fully power the handset and also increase the battery capacity.

In fact, the battery density has increased the capacity by 16% and also the life span by more than 3 hours when applied to the newly launched LG G2, a premium smart phone by LG Electronics.

The competitors in the market may succeed in stacking two batteries to make it into the step design but due to the increased cost of such technology, rivals will not achieve to do so, unless they can make it to an integral single type just like LG Chem.

At the Nanjing plant, LG Chem plans to launch Stepped Battery that goes beyond 3 to 4 step designs, stacking up more batteries into one single type depending on customer needs.

In addition, LG Chem’s Curved Battery refers to packs that can power IT devices with curved screen or flexible designs such as smart phones, watches and glasses. The company has the exclusive patent of Stack & Folding technology which reduces physical stress when realizing the curved design of battery packs. The mass production of Curved Battery has been started since this month and the products will power the next smart phone line up of LG Electronics.

Lastly, Cable Battery is applied to IT devices that are bendable, wearable and even be tied into a knot. Because it has been designed to use low electricity, the battery does not heat up although the user may operate the device for a long time. Moreover, the waterproof features of the battery allow itself to be used in wearable gadgets regardless of flexible figures, from necklace types to smart watches.

“Through the exclusiveness of our unique technology, LG Chem has succeeded in launching future batteries that have not existed before. This shall be the fundamental grounds for LG Chem to become a pioneer in the market. As a leader of battery manufacturer, we will continue to strive for Global No.1 by developing more of optimized, safe and long-lasting batteries to make it the business of future generation”, said YS Kwon, the President of Energy Solution Company, LG Chem.

LG Chem will be participating at the InterBattery 2013, which will be held in COEX from Oct 16th to display and demonstrate related products in a private zone.

About LG Chem
LG Chem, Ltd. is a globally diversified chemical company which operates three main business units: Petrochemicals, IT & Electronic Materials, and Energy Solution. The chemical business manufactures a wide range of products, from petrochemical goods to high-value added plastics. It also extends its chemical expertise into high-tech areas such as electronic materials and rechargeable batteries. LG Chem is one of the world’s largest lithium-ion battery manufacturers. For more information, please visit the LG Chem website at www.lgchem.com

The Colibri T30 incorporates DVFS (Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Switching) and Thermal Throttling which enables the system to continuously adjust operation frequency and voltage in response to changes in workload and temperature to get the best performance with the lowest power.
The integrated NVIDIA Graphics enables visually rich, smooth and fast user interfaces.

Supreme Graphics Performance for Demanding Applications

The module targets a wide range of applications, including: Digital Signage, Medical Devices, Navigation, Industrial Automation, HMIs, Avionics, Entertainment System, POS, Data Acquisition, Thin Clients, Robotics, Gaming and much more
It offers a wide range of interfaces from simple GPIOs, industry standard I2C and SPI buses through to high speed USB 2.0 interfaces and a high speed memory bus. The HDMI interface makes it very easy to connect large, full HD resolution displays.

Easy Performance Upgrade

Existing customers will benefit from an extremely easy migration path from the current Colibri PXAxxx or Colibri T20 module range to the Colibri T30 – all Colibri modules are electrically pin compatible. New customers will also appreciate the ability to select the Colibri module most suitable for their application to achieve the optimum price/performance balance without the need to support different carrier board designs.
